JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (June 2, 2004) – With a well-written essay, four college students have the chance to be awarded $1,000 from the Missouri Farmers Union Family Farm Opportunity Center to help pay for their schooling.

The cooperative development branch of Missouri Farmers Union is offering four $1,000 scholarships to students enrolled in a two or four year college during the 2004-2005 school year.

To apply for this scholarship, students must write an essay that includes their need for scholarship money, their agriculture background, leadership ability, academic achievements and career goals. The deadline for submission is July 23, 2004. Essays must be postmarked by this date to be eligible. Winners will be announced at the Missouri Farmers Union booth in the Agriculture Building at the 2004 Missouri State Fair August 12-22 in Sedalia.

Essays should include the desire of returning to a family farm operation or in some way support family farm agriculture in a rural community. Essays receiving consideration should also promote future relationships between farmers, workers and consumers. Future goals should focus on safe, sustainable production and processing practices.

The essay should be no longer than two pages, one inch margins, single-spaced and 12 point Times New Roman font. In the top left hand corner, include your name, mailing address, phone number and the college you are attending.

Please send essays to Missouri Farmers Union, Jill Lucht, 325 Jefferson St., Suite 100A, Jefferson City, MO 65101. If you have any questions, please call 573.659.4787 and ask for Jill Lucht or Tricia Falter.
